“Well?” Sin demanded, not bothering with a greeting as his cousin came into the study where he’d taken refuge the moment it was announced the coach had been sighted.

“Andrew…” Kas bowed elaborately as was the custom when speaking to a participant in an acceptance ceremony. “I have the honor to inform you your intended leman is intelligent, well-favored, very soft-spoken, and…”

“Damn it, Kas. Don’t extoll her virtues. I want to hear about her vices.”

“She doesn’t have any, I’m afraid,” Kas replied, not sounding the least bit apologetic. “Shalimar Khan has been raised and trained for only one purpose, and that’s to please her kh’ta.” He tapped Sin’s chest with his forefinger. “That’s you, you lucky devil.”

“Cursed is more like it.” Sin slapped his hand away. “Any chance she’s not a virgin?”

“Sorry.” Kas shook his head. “As physician of the accepting clan, I performed the required examination to verify her family’s assertions of her chastity, and…”

“And?” Sin asked anxiously.

“She has a slight frame and isn’t very tall—I imagine she’s still some growing to do—but the girl’s healthy and very definitely virgin. That part of the examination caused her some discomfort.”

Because the acceptance ceremony demanded a manual exam, Kas hadn’t used his CompuMed unit which would’ve simplified things and gotten the same result.

“Could I hurt her?”

“Andrew, are you that desperate?” Kas though he detected hope in the question. Pityingly, he looked at Sin. “Quite frankly, I can’t see you being cruel to any woman, for any reason.”

“No, no…” Sin shook his head, “You said she’s slight. Considering her size and mine…Kas, could it possibly harm her if we couple?”

“It’s doubtful, Andrew. I’ve female patients smaller than she who have mates my size and they’re able to accept them easily.”

“Damn.” Sin spun around, striking the desk with one fist. “Why’s this happening to me?” He looked back at his cousin. “I know. God hates me. Because I was a criminal for so long and enjoyed it so much.”

“Andrew…”

“Do you suppose,” Sin went on, “it’s too late for me to renounce my heirship and become a fugitive again?”

“You’d better not.” Kas glared at him. “You’ve already given the Khans a slight by not being the one greeting their party.”

“Kas.” There was desperation in the green eyes looking into his. “I can’t do it. I just can’t.”

“I’m afraid it’s been taken out of your hands, Andrew.” Kas didn’t intend to sound unsympathetic. He was simply stating a fact.

“What do you mean?”

“According to my examination, the girl’s scheduled to go into her heat-cycle tonight, probably soon after the ceremony. If you’re in her presence for longer than five minutes, you won’t be able to control what you do.”

“Then I’m doomed.” Sin dropped into a chair, face in his hands.

Kas laughed. He couldn’t help it. The whole thing was ridiculous. Sin stared at him a moment. He got to his feet and then he, too, was laughing. They fell into each other’s arms, gasping and chuckling and pounding each other’s backs.

“Come on, Andrew. It’s not going to be so bad.
